The Board will consider approval of the 2025 Periodic Evaluation of the Groundwater Sustainability Plan at its meeting on December 12, 2024.
Periodic Evaluation Process
SGMA requires a full evaluation of a GSP to be completed no longer than every 5 years following adoption of the Basin GSP. This is referred to as a Periodic Evaluation (PE). The Periodic Evaluation is intended to be a thorough assessment of how a GSP is performing and whether modifications are needed.
In October 2023, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) released anticipated guidance: A Guide to Annual Reports, Periodic Evaluations, & Plan Amendments. MGA is using the DWR guidance in preparing the Basin GSP PE, which is due by January 30, 2025.
Work on the PE commenced in July 2023. In December 2023 and March 2024, the MGA received updates on the PE and the public has had opportunity for comment. In March 2024, the MGA Board determined that there is no compelling new information at this time to amend the 2020 Basin GSP and directed the continued preparation of the PE for submission to DWR by the required deadline. The Board received public comments and provided comments on the Draft Periodic Evaluation at its meeting on September 19, 2024.
